Joaquin was mercilessly thrown into the real world as a teenager. With little knowledge on how to properly work or where to get a job, he turned to the one thing he knew doing since he was a child—drugs. 

It seems his exposure to drugs through his father had made a huge impact on his life decisions. He started out by growing marijuana and selling it for a small amount of cash but by the late 1970s, Joaquin found himself working with another rising drug dealer, Hector Luis Palma Salazar.
